Help Shape the Future of PIP

Following last spring’s welfare reform discussions, many disabled people and advocacy organisations across the UK raised significant concerns about the future of disability benefits.  The Government was forced to abandon the controversial “4 point rule” which would have drastically cut eligibility for Personal Independence Payment (PIP) but questions remain on how future changes to this benefit might affect eligibility, assessments, and ongoing support.  Those conversations highlighted widespread uncertainty about whether the system would continue to meet the needs of those it is designed to support.

The UK Government has now launched a review focused specifically on PIP, led by Sir Stephen Timms.  Known as the Timms Review, this aims to take a closer look at how PIP is working in practice and the Department for Work and Pensions has opened a Call for Evidence as part of this review.  This gives disabled people and those who support disabled people a direct opportunity to shape the future of the benefit.

Why this matters

This review follows extensive discussions and debate around welfare reform, during which many concerns were raised about how PIP operates in practice.  Many aspects of the benefit have been under scrutiny and now those conversations are being taken a step further.

The Call for Evidence is looking to gather real-world insight to help shape recommendations that could directly affect how PIP works in the future.  The broader the range of views submitted, the stronger the evidence base will be and the more likely it is that future changes reflect the real needs of disabled people across the UK.

Who can take part

The Call for Evidence is open to everyone but there is a strong emphasis on hearing from those with lived experience, namely disabled people, their carers and family members.  They also want to hear from organisations and advocates, healthcare professionals and experts and elected representatives.

No specialist knowledge is required to contribute.  Personal experiences, whether they are your own or someone you support, is valuable.
