Physical Activity for All Abilities

Updated: Jun 28, 2023

Maintaining an active lifestyle is often associated with numerous health benefits, and this is especially true if you have a physical disability or long-term health condition. Engaging in regular activity not only enhances your physical wellbeing but also contributes to mental and emotional wellness.

Although there may be challenges and considerations, the importance of physical activity cannot be overstated. Why is it important to get active? There are so many benefits that exercise can offer:

  • Engaging in regular physical activity can work wonders for your physical health. It strengthens your muscles, improves flexibility, and enhances your cardiovascular system. And it’s possible to find activities that match your abilities, be it adaptive yoga, wheelchair sports or water-based exercises. Your body will thank you for getting it moving.

  • Physical activity isn't just about fitness—it's about embracing the world around you. Kent has some incredible outdoor spaces, natural features and stunning coastlines. So whether you grab a friend or join a community group, start exploring what our beautiful county has to offer.

  • Physical activity releases endorphins, which help to elevate your mood and reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. Getting active also helps you to find more independence, enhance your functionality, and inspires confidence. Whatever you are interested in, you can be sure that movement will help to lift your spirits.

  • Say hello to a world of connections. Engaging in physical activities allows you to meet like-minded individuals who share your passions. Join local clubs, online communities, or specialized programs tailored to your interests. Your new activity could be the first step in meeting new people and extending your network.

Ready to try something new? Take advantage of resources designed to help you find the perfect activity that suits your abilities and interests. Explore adaptive sports organizations, community centres, or online platforms dedicated to inclusive fitness.

The Everyday Active Kent website features resources to give you advice and support on finding an activity to suit you. You can explore activities that are suitable for specific health conditions or alternatively, find advice, support and resources that other organisations offer for specific disabilities.

You could also visit the Every Body Moves website to search for activities that are available near you. This UK-wide site lets you search using your postcode and results can be filtered by impairment or even by the day of the week that you would like to get active.

Remember, this journey is about finding activities that spark joy within you. Embrace the fun and wellness that physical activity brings and enjoy a new adventure.

You inspired me to check out my local Leisure Centre, Mote Park in Maidstone. Unfortunately, their Accessibility page on their website isn’t working:

Page not found

No umbraco document matches the url '/policies-documents/accessibility-at-maidstone/'.

This page can be replaced with a custom 404. Check the documentation for "custom 404".

This page is intentionally left ugly ;-)

It doesn’t exactly instil confidence!
